ROBERT REDBIRD

Kiowa Tribe

Robert Redbird is well-known for his technical skill and effectiveness in portraying spiritual themes in Indian life. A member of the Kiowa tribe and the Kiowa Gourd Clan, and a native Redbird preserves and communicates the Kiowa culture and way of life both for his people and for art connoisseurs of all cultures.

Inner inspiration for Redbird’s paintings comes from the stories he has heard from his grand parents and the older Kiowa people. His themes include legends, visions and the culture of the Kiowa people. The style of his paintings is contemporary, drawing from his Oklahoma heritage as well as from the influences of the Southwest Indian tribes of Arizona and New Mexico.

His name is recognized world-wide and he has received many awards and prizes, most recently Best of Class, Theme Category, Colorado Indian Market, July 1987; and First Place, Contemporary Art, Dallas Cultural Center, November 1986. He was named to the top five of the list of “Best Investments in Indian Art Under $1,000” for 1987 and has won first prizes and best of show awards at such prestigious shows as the Heard Museum Show, Scottsdale Nation, Gallup Ceremonial, Oklahoma Indian Art Center Invitational, Concho Centennial, Anadarko Indian Exposition, Tulsa Group Show, and Chickasha Group Show. Two of his paintings hang in the permanent collection of the Heard Museum.

In 1981, Texas Christian University Press published a large hardcover book titled 'Kiowa Voices'. A Redbird painting, “Peyote Visions,” was featured on the cover. The Press published a second volume in 1983 and again included a Redbird painting, “Tribal Memories,” on the cover.

Robert Redbird’s work is in great demand. His paintings have been added to collections in all 50 states and some nine foreign countries over the last several years and the demand for his work continues to grow. His creativity has continued to evolve and he believes he has yet to hit his peak as an artist. This promises many more years of outstanding production and accomplishments to come in a career marked by many fine achievements.
